World Table Tennis Day 2024

On 26 April, a beautiful Saturday, the Specialised Table Tennis Sports School in Dubăsari held a tournament to celebrate World Table Tennis Day. It was held under the patronage of the International Table Tennis Federation Foundation (ITTF FOUNDATION) and the Table Tennis Federation of the Republic of Moldova.
World Table Tennis Day was first celebrated in 2015. The date originally chosen was 6 April, timed to coincide with the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace. But in 2023 the date was moved to 23 April, in honour of the birthday of Ivor Montagu, the celebrated British table tennis figure, organiser of the first World Table Tennis Championship (1926) and the first president of the International Table Tennis Federation.
The festive opening was attended by the head of the State Administration of Dubăsari, Chaban Ruslan, and by European and USSR canoe champion Boris Matveev. The competition was opened by the school's director Grosul Valeriu, Honoured Coach of the Republic of Moldova, and by the president of the Table Tennis Federation of the Republic of Moldova, Sarandi Ion.
Around 100 athletes from every corner of our country took part. The events were played in three age categories for boys and girls in singles — “U-13”, “U-15” and “U-19”. All the participants received shirts with the World Table Tennis Day emblem. The athletes and coaches were given lunch at the “Dnestrovskii sad” restaurant. The tournament was held in a friendly and exciting atmosphere, celebrating our favourite sport. The winners and runners-up received cups, medals, diplomas and cash prizes.
